Welcome to "Wild Fruits of Wellington". This is my personal blog to share some basic knowledge about what grows here, when it flowers and fruits, and how to grow it if you so desire. My previous day job involved collecting seed and propagating over 100 species of local native plants each year for the Wellington City Council’s Berhampore Nursery. On this blog I will be sharing what I've collected each month with photos and my personal notes on propagation and germination times, and you can get some general information from the other two main pages, Propagation; collection, processing, pre-sowing treatments etc., and Pests and Diseases covering some of the most common troublesome ailments for young seedlings as well as non-chemical options for control.
This site is designed as a 'starters guide'. As the seasons progress you can tag along a few species at a time. Seeing as some plants are easier to spot when they're flowering I'll post photos of those, and some of the less well known Wellington plants, but we'll revisit them at collection time in a bit more detail. I might also add a few photos of things I'm not intending to propagate just because they're lovely and I can't resist !
This is by no means a comprehensive coverage of this topic and is based on my own observations and records. As with many topics relating to the natural environment, the circumstances that influence flowering, fruiting and germination can be quite variable. Seeds vary in quality between plants, sites and seasons and of course, the growing media, environment and care they are given so bear this in mind and use this as a guideline only. It is, nonetheless a starting point !!
